CORGI LOCKHEED VEGA SMITHSONIAN (**)

In collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, Corgi, the venerable diecast metal toy manufacturer, have collectively produced a scale replica, diecast metal collection of renowned aircraft and spacecraft displayed in the Washington, D.C. based Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Designed in England to exacting standards with extraordinary detail and quality that will satisfy any ardent aeronautic or space enthusiast, the Smithsonian Collection by Corgi is perfect for older children and novice collectors.

The Smithsonian Collection by Corgi Lockheed Vega 5B, which measures approximately 2-7/8-inches long with a 4-1/4-inch wingspan, is a period correct, accurate reproduction of the actual aircraft, and features detailed graphics and markings. A Display Stand is included.

According to the Smithsonian, Amelia Earhart set two of her of her many aviation records in this Lockheed Vega 5B. In 1932 she flew it alone across the Atlantic Ocean, then flew it nonstop across the United States-both firsts for a woman.

Introduced in 1927, the Vega was the first product of Jack Northrop and Allan Loughead's Lockheed Aircraft Company. Sturdy, roomy, streamlined, and fast, the Vega became favored by pilots seeking to set speed and distance records. It sported a cantilevered (internally braced) one-piece spruce wing and a spruce veneered monocoque fuselage (a molded shell without internal bracing), which increased overall strength and reduced weight. A NACA cowling and wheel pants reduced drag and provided streamline style.

Amelia bought this Vega 5B in 1930 and call it her "Little Red Bus." After a nose over accident later that year, the fuselage was replaced and strengthened to carry extra fuel tanks along with the addition of three compasses, a drift indicator, and a more powerful engine.
